BARACK AND MICHELLE OBAMA ARE BRINGING CIVICS LESSONS TO KIDS IN NEW NETFLIX SERIES

Barack and Michelle Obama are extremely busy creating outstanding content with their production company, Higher Ground. In their latest project, the Obama’s will bring civics lessons to kids in their new Netflix series, entitled, We The People.

Per a press release sent to The Root, We the People is set to teach kids all about American civics as well as empower and “educate a new generation of young Americans about the power of the people.” The new show will span across ten animated music videos that creatively brighten the sometimes mundane world of U.S. civics education.

Some of the artists that the Obama’s have enlisted to help bring this project to fruition musically include: H.E.R., Janelle Monáe, Cordae, Daveed Diggs, Andra Day, poet Amanda Gorman, KYLE, Brandi Carlisle, Lin-Manuel Miranda, Bebe Rexha and Adam Lambert. The press release goes on to say that the series serves as “an exuberant call to action for everyone to rethink civics as a living, breathing thing and to reframe their understanding of what government and citizenship mean in a modern world.”

The former President commented on Twitter, “Michelle and I are excited to share our latest show from Higher Ground: We The People. Some of our favorite artists got together with amazing animators to remix civics—and the result is a lot better than what we had in school. Check it out on @Netflix this July 4.”

Many are hailing this new series as the modern-day Schoolhouse Rock. Many of you may remember that popular Saturday morning cartoon commercial break that spawned favorites such as “I’m Just a Bill,” “The Great American Melting Pot,’ and “Tyrannosaurus Debt”.

We The People was created by Chris Nee, who also previously created Disney’s Doc McStuffins. The new project is  executive produced by Black-ish creator Kenya Barris, in addition to the the Obamas. Other executive producers of the new project include Tonia Davis and Priya Swaminathan for Higher Ground, Nee for Laughing Wild, and Barris for Khalabo Ink Society. Producing the series are Ada Chiaghana, Erynn Sampson, and PeeDee Shindel. 

We The People will premiere on Netflix on July 4th.
