13-year-old Zaya Wade, the transgender daughter of NBA Legend Dwyane Wade, is “happy feeling blue,” in more ways than one.
Zaya recently dyed her hair blue and took to Instagram to post a few candids of herself showing off her sky-blue locks. In the photos she posted, Zaya wore a light blue shirt and facemask to complete her outfit. She captioned the post: “Livin Coolđź’§.”

Zaya Wade was originally born as Zion, but she came out as transgender and changed her name in February 2020. Dwyane and his wife, actress Gabrielle Union haven’t hesitated to defend Zaya’s sexuality in the past and since Zaya came out, they have been nothing but loving and supportive to her. For instance, during the 2020 GLAAD Media Awards on July 31, Wade and Union praised Zaya for leading them in support of the LGBTQ+ community.
“We stand as allies with the LGBTQ+ community as proud parents of a transgender child,” said Wade. “Our daughter Zaya is leading us in our journey, and we’re doing all we can to give every one of our kids the ability to live their truth. I didn’t always understand how to do that—but I want to thank Zaya for teaching me, and GLAAD for elevating the images and messages that accelerate acceptance in every family.”
Black transgender people often face severe discrimination and deadly violence in America, and as Zaya’s stepmother, Gabrielle Union called on viewers to support the Black Trans Lives Matter movement. “That mission means even more to us now as we raise all of our Black children. Black lives matter and Black trans lives matter,” she said. “We are calling on all of our racial justice warriors out there to open your hearts and your minds to the LGBTQ+ community so that we can work together and empower each other and save lives.”
