K.C. Undercover has finally arrived. Zendaya fans have been waiting for this new hit action-sitcom for quite some time now, and knowing Zendaya will be such a big part of it has only built anticipation more.
As you’ve probably heard by now, the teen sensation is not only the star of the new Disney Channel show, but also a co-producer. In a newly released Q&A, Zendaya was given the opportunity to talk about what it’s been like to take on a behind-the-scenes role and how her time at Disney has been.
About producing, the 18-year-old star admits it is especially great to have a voice — a say in how the series develops. Already, she has been able to share her opinions and her vision; cast her Shake it Up co-star, Bella Thorne; and wardrobe has also become a major part of her job.
“I think about choosing something that I would wear or something that my best friend would wear, and really think of what a normal teenager would want to see and wear,” she explained. When it comes to shoes, Zendaya pointed out that while TV characters often wear shoes in the house, it’s unrealistic. So she took steps to change that on K.C. Undercover. “I wanted to make sure that K.C. could relate to an everyday person, and not wear shoes in the house all the time.”
But as much fun as contributing to the show’s overall look and feel, the reality is that producing is a lot of work, especially when you’re already the star. “I was surprised with how much goes into producing a series. You never really realize how much effort it takes to put on a production like this until you are actually behind the camera.” Still, Zendaya added that it’s all worth it when you see everything come together.
Climbing the Disney ranks has put Zendaya in a whole new class of young Disney stars. She doesn’t seem to be going anywhere, anytime soon. The Oakland native said, “When you’re part of the Disney family, they definitely take care of you, and it’s been incredible. I couldn’t have asked for a better home.”
K.C. Undercover premiered on the Disney Channel on Sunday, January 18, at 8:30 pm.
