Black-ish star Yara Shahidi was out to show her support for Californian wildlife at the Wayke Up Fundraiser in Hollywood, December 14th.
Presented by Wildfox and Ladygunn Magazine, the event raised funds and awareness for Wildlife Waystation, a national non-profit sanctuary for exotic and native animals. The organization is dedicated to the rescue and rehabilitation of these species.
This 14 year old starlet currently portrays Zoey on the new hit sitcom, Black-ish, alongside Anthony Anderson, Tracee Ellis Ross, and Laurence Fishburne. Her character, a self-absorbed teen attached to her phone, may not be the type of person you expect to attend charity events — but Yara has assured the public she is nothing like Zoey in real life.
“For me, personally, I’m usually not on my phone that much. I prefer listening to old radio shows and watching foreign films than tweeting,” Yara explained. “It’s one of the things that we have to just learn as a generation–that sometimes it’s okay to step back.”
Supporting wildlife preservation is not Yara’s only philanthropic interest. She has also been a volunteer for Integrative Clinics International.
