Unconfirmed rumors abound that Jaden Smith may be joining TV’s DC universe. Warner Bros. seems to be considering a live-action series featuring Static, a young superhero in affiliation with the Teen Titans, and Jaden just might be at the top of their casting list.
Jaden has been acting since starring alongside his father, Will Smith, in Pursuit of Happyness in 2006, but has yet to venture a TV role. His mother, Jada Pinkett Smith is currently doing a marvelous job at portraying Fish Mooney on the new series, Gotham, which functions as a prequel to the Batman story. The show explores the darkness of Gotham City from the perspective of a young Bruce Wayne and Detective James Gordon, as well as a host of blossoming Batman villains.
It would certainly be a good time to expand on the Static story, which was first developed as a DC comic series in 1993. It was short-lived, wrapping up in 1997 when Static became a part of the main DC universe through the Teen Titans. An animated TV show Static Shock premiered in 2000 and ran for four seasons.
Jaden is the perfect age to portray Static, a high school student who develops electromagnetic powers after being doused by an experimental chemical during a gang war. Like many young superheroes, Static struggles to keep his city safe while maintaining a normal teen life.
Although it would be Jaden’s first lead TV role, it would by no means be his first association with comic book culture. The young star has donned an all white Batman suit to both Kim Kardashian’s wedding, and 2014 Comic Con.
It might be worth noting that one branch of Static’s story has actually even taken the superhero to Gotham… potential crossover episode? Only time will tell.
