Jay-Z is looking forward to Beyoncé and their three children — Blue Ivy, 14, and 9-year-old twins Rumi and Sir — seeing a more personal side of him in his new docuseries.
At the New York premiere of JAY-Z in 8, the rapper said he’s excited for his family to watch the eight-part series, even if some moments make him cringe.
“I’m really excited,” Jay-Z told E! News. “They know these things. We talk all the time. It’ll be fascinating to see on a big screen and at times, I know it’ll be, like, cringe.”
The 56-year-old explained that putting so much of himself on screen naturally comes with some discomfort.
“You know, when you put yourself out there like that, you get embarrassed but it’s honest, and it’s a beautiful piece. So, I’m very proud of it.”
JAY-Z in 8 premieres Sept. 18 on HBO and Max. The series features conversations between Jay-Z and producer Rick Rubin as they revisit his 30-year career.
While music has played a major role in Jay-Z’s life, he says fatherhood has given it meaning.
“It gives everything meaning, everything. I’ll go cross-country, do what I have to do, and I’m back on the plane that night. I love taking them to school. I love picking them up. Everything means so much more.”
The proud dad also had plenty to say about Blue Ivy, who has become a regular presence onstage with Beyoncé.
“She worked at this, you know, and it makes me proud that she fought for something that she really wanted to do,” Jay-Z said of Blue’s growth as a performer. “I don’t think we going to be able to get her off that stage now.”
Jay-Z then revealed one of Blue’s hidden talents.
“Blue is a crazy pianist, but she won’t let us get her a teacher,” he told GQ. “She doesn’t want it to be a job. But she has perfect pitch. If she hears a song, she’ll be like, ‘Play it again,’ and then she’ll teach herself.”
The 14-year-old later showed off those piano skills during her dad’s July concert at Yankee Stadium, where played during his performance for song “Feelin’ It.” Jay-Z introduced her to the crowd as “the legendary Blue Ivy Carter.”
