WNBA Phoenix Mercury star Skylar Diggins-Smith is making shocking accusations against her team as she continues her maternity leave.
The 33-year-old six-time WNBA All-Star and Olympic gold medalist is saying that her team has not allowed her to utilize any of its resources this season, including the team’s practice facility. Diggins-Smith has been out on maternity leave and states that utilizing the team’s resources will help her get back into playing shape.
Diggins-Smith took to Twitter, now known as “X,” saying that her team was “… not gonna acknowledge me this year and it’s ok guys. We’re not affiliated unless it’s the checks….per management. I can’t even use the practice facility or any resources. But I still love the X-Factor!!.”
In another tweet, Diggins-Smith continued being more specific about exactly what resources she has been barred from using. She tweeted saying that she does not have access to the team’s “massage therapists, chiropractor, chefs, strength and conditioning, nutritionist accessibility, etc…”
The mother-of two stressed that, “EVERY other player has access to. However I’m still down 48lbs on my own and I’m feeling great!”
People Magazine reached out to the Mercury and the WNBA for comment. Nikki Blue, the Mercury’s interim head coach, responded saying that, “Skylar is on maternity leave right now and as we do with players on maternity leave, we give them their space.”
Diggins-Smith took to social media again, stating that she feels like when she took time off previously for personal issues, that it was okay, but maternity leave seems to be a different story.
“It was all good when I was leaving for personal time!!” she tweeted. “But when I’m leaving bc I was having complications and scared of risking my child…while leading the league in minutes (pregnant). Trade her?”
Diggins-Smith is currently in her last year of her Mercury contract. Perhaps a trade is in her future? Who knows. We can only wait and see. The talented athlete has played for the Mercury since 2020.
In addition to her newborn Diggins-Smith and her husband share three-year-old Seven.
