Halle Bailey was a real life mermaid at The Little Mermaid premiere this past Monday (May 8). The star-studded screening was held in Los Angeles, California, and featured the actress in all of her fierceness on the red carpet.
Halle wore a blue gown by Valdrin Sahiti that echoed the main theme of the film. The young adult smiled wide while striking all the right poses for the cameras.
The Little Mermaid revisits the classic Disney tale. Ariel is a beautiful singer willing to exchange her singing voice to impress a prince on land. Unfortunately, the young mermaid makes a deal with Ursula who is the wicked witch of the sea. Not only does Ariel lose the ability to sing, but she also loses her capacity to talk.
Many fans were excited to learn of Halle Bailey taking on the role of Ariel in the latest remake of The Little Mermaid. A few critics, however, took issue with the actress, who is also a singer, portraying the fantasy character because of the color of Halle’s skin. The entertainer addressed the backlash she received during a recent interview.
“This is such a blessing, and the movie is bigger than me,” Bailey shared with Vogue: Arabia. “I initially expected everyone to be as excited as I was, but the reality of it all hit me later as I realized the world that we live in,” the actress revealed. “I just hope that people who aren’t sure about it, go and watch the film and realize we did the original justice,” Bailey shared.
Melissa McCarthy joins Halle Bailey as Ursula in the remake of The Little Mermaid. Jonah Hauer-King stars as Prince Eric in the film. Simone Ashley, Lorena Andrea, and Awkwafina are also in the film. Fans can watch The Little Mermaid in theaters on May 26, 2023.
