Dwyane Wade is ready to give advice to parents of trans children. The retired NBA player and his wife, Gabrielle Union, recently shared their best suggestions for moms and dads with kids in the LGBTQ+ community.
“[Think of] the moment when you were in the hospital and you grabbed your daughter, and you looked at your daughter,” Dwyane shared during a short conversation with Variety. “All the things that went through your mind and all the emotions that went through your mind,” the celebrity father shared. “And how much love fills your heart at that moment. Don’t let that ever leave you, no matter what,” Dwyane Wade advised.
Zaya Wade came out as transgender in 2019. The teen has served as an inspiration for many who view her determination to be herself as a bold move. Some have criticized Zaya along with Dwyane Wade and Gabrielle Union for her choice to live as she sees fit. Dwyane has been quick to defend his daughter against the trolls.
“We’re just doing our part as parents,” Dwyane shared at Met Gala. “We love our kids. We get to see them every day,” he added. “That’s what people on the outside don’t get to see, but we know them and we see them all the time.”
Wade further explained, “The one thing we do as parents is we find our mini-mes and we try to make them just like us. But just understand, our kids are gonna be who they are. It’s our job to help mold them and help try to push them in the right places that they want to go. But just remember that moment, what you said in that hospital the day that they were born.”
Zaya Wade is Dwyane Wade’s child with his first wife, Siohvaughn Funches. The celebrity father has four kids – Zaya, Zaire, Kaavia James, and Xavier – in all.
