Who better to help promote your brand than Kaavia James? Gabrielle Union’s Flawless haircare recently shared video footage from their CEO’s latest promotional campaign that featured shots of Gabrielle with her youngest daughter.
In the clip, Kaavia sits as her mom does her hair. The youngster is an entire mood as she looks away from the cameras while enjoying quality time spent with mom on the set. Zaya and Zaire Wade were also present to help with the latest promo efforts of Flawless.
Gabrielle Union has been open about her hair journey, which included relaxers at one point. “I just wanted to fit in,” Union recently said when discussing the motivation behind her desire to chemically straighten her hair. “I wanted swoop, swinging hair and in order to get that I needed a relaxer,” the L.A.’s Finest star added.
“I didn’t care about my hair health,” Gabrielle further explained. “I would try to leave the relaxer on as long as possible,” she added. “It was about assimilating and trying to look and appear appropriate and attractive. I wanted that kind of validation that young Black girls get when you fully assimilate and you move away from Blackness towards something that is a little bit more destabilizing and not really affirming at all.”
The effects of having a relaxer weighed on Gabrielle to the degree of the actress needing to move away from the practice of straightening her tresses. “It felt like one of the hardest breakups ever,” Union recently shared with PEOPLE. “I’ve been married twice, and I feel my breakup with relaxers was harder than my divorce,” the celebrity mused.
Breaking up with relaxers led Gabrielle down the path of self-love and acceptance. She now aims to pass on these qualities to her and husband Dwyane Wade’s kids.
“Right now, Kaavia’s hair is more [wild] and Zaya is embracing her ‘fro,” the celebrity mom said of Kaav and Zaya’s style differences in terms of hair. “As Black parents specifically, we feel like if we can control every little thing, every little decision, our child will be safe, loved and protected,” Union shared.
“But, at the end of the day, we’re just trying to control them,” the celebrity mom said. “It’s okay to let them experiment — when safe and reasonable,” Union added. “So, I’m just trying to let them be free and explore their hair while really leading into hair health.”
