These can definitely help to ensure a smooth introduction and get your toddler ready for being big sister or brother.

Include Them in Your Pregnancy

Make them a part of the journey. Allow them to tag along to an ultrasound appointment so that they can see baby from the beginning. Let them feel mom’s tummy when the new baby kicks or moves. Assign them to be head-decorator in charge. Ensure that they feel a part of the process from the beginning.

Make the First Meeting Meaningful

When baby arrives, make the first meeting meaningful. Create an first encounter that is something special just for the two siblings. Of course, a big brother or big sister t-shirt is a necessity. Make sure to take plenty of pictures so that the pair can look back on their special moment.

Nurture the Bond

In order to nurture the bond, give big sis or brother a gift form baby. Find out what are a few of their favorite things that they don’t have that they would like to be able to show their little sibling and give that special gift to big sis or brother. They will be over the moon. 

Give Them a Sense of Purpose

Once the baby arrives, giving your older child some responsibility can help them in figuring out their role as big sis or brother. Give them age-appropriate tasks such as: bringing diapers and wipes over, “reading” to the baby, or playing with the baby while you’re in the shower or need a small break.
