Hamilton star Leslie Odom Jr. and his wife, Nicolette Robinson, are on the cover of Parents magazine. The celebrities are celebrating the Back-To-School season with the media source’s September issue.
Leslie and Nicolette are preparing for their oldest daughter, Lucille Ruby Odom, to start Pre-K. “We’re really excited about the social aspect of it for her,” Nicolette shares. “When she spends time with other kids, there’s just such a huge leap in her development,” the celebrity says. Leslie adds, “She’s our first kid, so we’re going to learn a lot too. We’re no experts!”
Leslie Odom Jr. and Nicolette Robinson welcomed their son, Able Phineas Odom, last year. The little one came four years after his older sister who celebrated her fourth birthday in April.
“Before I became a parent, I thought, ‘I’d better start making a list of all the things that I want to teach them,'” Leslie Odom tells Parents. “How do you remember all of the things that you want to teach your kids,” the celebrity asks. “[Now] I think you’re lucky if your kids remember three to five things that you say. I think you need to pick the three to five things that are most important to you and find 100,000 ways to say those three to five things.”
One lesson Nicolette hopes to pass on to her kids is the importance of boundaries. “How to say no. How to stand up for yourself,” Robinson says regarding the values she hopes to instill in her kids.
“One of our favorite stories came from my mom, who saw it happen on grandparents’ day in Lucille’s preschool,” Nicolette shares. “Lucille and her best friend were playing in the sandbox, and there was this other little girl who was bullying them, trying to kick them out. My mom said Lucille told her, ‘Don’t talk to us like that.’ It reminded us that we have a tough cookie.”
Leslie Odom appreciates the tenacity Lucille displays. He hopes to pass on the value of strength and relationships to both of his kids.
“I really want my kids to know how to be in a relationship,” the Hamilton star explains. “If you know how to make a friend, you can build your whole life on that. You can build your whole life on your support network, and that will cover you in places where you may fall short. That extends to partnerships and to intimate relationships.”
