Alfonso Ribeiro lives in a “mixed world” that is not always accepted. The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air star talks about his life in the entertainment sphere and beyond with Atlanta Black Star.
“I am in a mixed relationship. And I get things and looks and comments constantly,” Ribeiro shares. “I find it very interesting because you see a lot of things on social media where people say things and people have positions and perspectives. And it’s not easy to make that choice, because you’re not at home in any home. I’m never going to be white and I’m never going to be fully supported in the Black house.”
Alfonso Ribeiro’s character on the Fresh Prince of Bel-Air, Carlton Banks, was perceived by some as “whitewashed” because of his attire and dance moves. In fact, there is an episode on the show in which Carlton addresses the notion of him not being “Black enough.” In some ways, Alfonso Ribeiro’s life mirrors his famous character.
“I’m in my own little world with support from almost no one, to be in love with someone I’ve fallen in love with,” Ribeiro says regarding his marriage to Angela Unkrich who is white. “How does that make sense,” Alfonso asks. “It doesn’t,” he concludes.
“We all want to live in a world where everyone is accepted for being and loving and living the way they choose to live,” Ribeiro tells Atlanta Black Star. “I will support any person that wants to live in a world that they want to live in,” Alfonso shares. “I live in a mixed world. I love in a mixed world. I live in a Black world, and I love in that world. I feel everyone should be supported.”
Angela and Alfonso Ribeiro have three kids – Ava, Anders, and Alfonso Jr. – together. Alfonso also has a daughter named Sienna from his first marriage.
