Detroit-native, Ray Lucas is being hailed a hero as the young father saves twin daughters from burning home.
Lucas explained in an interview with FOX 2, that he out running an errand with his girlfriend when fire engulfed their home. Lucas, said when he returned home, his mother and niece were outside, yet two other residents of the home were still inside.
“The house was engulfed in smoke, I saw my mom and my niece were standing at the door and they were frantic,” he said in the interview. “I just knew I had to get my babies out. That’s what went through my mind. You really couldn’t see your hand in front of your face – I really only found my babies due to my memory, just knowing where they were and knowing how to get to them – just from having that same route.”
Lucas was successful in getting Milan and Malaysia safely out of the home. However, all three sustained injuries.

“I was temporarily blind for three days and they said it was a miracle I could see,” Lucas said about his injuries in the interview. “I’ve got burns on my arms, but for the most part, everyone is still here.”
Malaysia sustained severe burns and her twin sister Milan also suffered second-degree burns and smoke inhalation. Both twins were admitted to the ICU.
As a result of the fire, the family has lost everything. A GoFundMe page was set up to help the family relieve some of their financial burdens in addition to helping them to with a new home. The original goal for donations was $40,000. The fundraiser has currently topped $278,844. And of course, generous donors are leaving messages of praise for the young father.
“Great job dad, praying for a speedy recovery for both you and your girls,” one donor wrote.
Another posted, “You are a hero!!! Your family needs help getting back on their feet after such a horrific accident. Good luck!”
A third wrote, “That man is a hero. Hoping for a swift recovery!”
