Brandy’s daughter, Sy’rai Smith, is excited to see her mom portray Cinderella in the 1997 film. The Rodgers & Hammerstein movie came to Disney+ last month, which prompted Brandy and Todrick Hall to commemorate the occasion with the release of the ‘Cinderella Medley’ on YouTube. Sy’rai joined more than one million fans in watching the musical selection and took to social media to share her joy in being able to see her mom in the iconic role on Disney+.
“It’s really exciting that I get to see my mom play Cinderella because I didn’t get to see her because I wasn’t born when the first one happened,” Smith said. “But I’m super excited,” Sy’rai added. “I am super proud of Mommy. The dress is beautiful. She looks beautiful and I can’t wait till those vocals come out ‘cause those vocals are like butter,” the 18-year-old wrote online. “I love mom, I love this project, I love Todrick and I’m real excited. I’m just happy, proud, and excited.”
Sy’rai Smith was born on June 16, 2002, which was approximately seven years after Cinderella (1997) came to the big screen. Brandy had multiple projects on her plate when Cinderella hit the pubic sphere. The artist was in the middle of recording a studio album, Never Say Never, while also filming for her hit television series, Moesha. Brandy worked alongside Whoopi Goldberg and the late Whitney Houston to make Cinderella a success.
“I couldn’t grasp it all because I was so young,” Brandy said of the experience during a recent interview with Vulture. “I didn’t really understand how revolutionary this was going to be, how big of an impact it was going to be,” she added. “I knew that it was special, but I didn’t really know how special. When I was able to see it all come together and see the finished product of it, I was like, Wow, this is different. This is something I had never seen. It inspired me. It was as if I wasn’t even watching me as Cinderella.”
