What's Love Got To Do With It?

Angela Bassett’s kids, Bronwyn and Slater, have not watched her most iconic role as Tina Turner in What’s Love Got To Do With It? (1993). The 911 actress recently revealed that her kids do not fully understand the depth of her amazing career during a recent interview on the podcast PEOPLE Every Day hosted by Janine Rubenstein.

“[They] haven’t seen it,” Bassett shared when asked about Bronwyn and Slater watching their mom portray the legendary Tina Turner in the singer’s biopic. “Let them discover it,” Angela continued. “Let their friends discover it,” she added. “Maybe [then] I’d get some more respect around here,” the celebrity mom mused. “I tell them, you don’t know what I got up my sleeve.”

Angela Bassett’s role as Tina Turner in What’s Love Got To Do With It? earned her an Oscar nomination as well as a Golden Globe award. The celebrity, who struggled to get her career off the ground prior to the 1993 film, went into the audition with a strong desire to secure the role.

“I thought that if I were to get [the part], it would be one of those movies that would … cement my face with my name,” Angela revealed. “I was always that actor that was struggling going to auditions or doing guest spots on weekend television shows,” the celebrity continued. “[I told myself], ‘Whatever happens, whether it works or whether it doesn’t, you got to be memorable.'”

Bassett recently served as one of the voices behind Disney’s Soul, which recently received a Golden Globe nomination for Best Animated Motion Picture. “They really enjoyed [Soul],” Angela said of her kids’ reaction to the film.

There are certain aspects unique to each film that entertainers must learn to make a movie great. Still, even with learning the flow of Soul, Bassett deemed her role as Tina Turner as the most involved of her career.

“Nothing has been as difficult as Tina Turner,” the celebrity mom shared with Janine Rubenstein. “Nothing as difficult physically, emotionally, spiritually, vocally. Nothing, absolutely nothing,” Bassett declared.
