Octavia Spencer is not giving up the hope of being a mom someday. The A Kid Like Jake star reflects on the notion of her adding the title of “parent” to her long list of accomplishments while also reflecting on her latest film.
“I had always seen myself as a parent of three.,” Spencer says. “Since we haven’t found Mr. Right, my eggs, you know, they’re expiring on the shelf. Those days are dwindling,” she admits. Still, “There are avenues. There are other ways to have children now, so I’m not saying I’m never going to be a parent. But I probably won’t be a biological [mom].”
Octavia Spencer stars alongside Jim Parsons and Claire Danes in a film that challenges us all to rethink the way that we view gender. In A Kid Like Jake, Alex and Greg Wheeler (Danes and Parsons, respectively) have a 4-year-old who prefers dolls over toy trucks. The Wheelers think that little Jake is just going through a phase, but the youngster’s preschool teacher sees Jake’s preferences as more. Alex and Greg will have to be brave as they face a world that does not understand nonconformists like their son.
Although she is not yet a mom, Octavia tells media that the characters in A Kid Like Jake are quite the inspiration. “I’m always filled with hope when children are at the center of something because they are our tomorrow,” the actress explains. “I hope that I will be brave like Jim [Parsons] and Claire [Danes’] characters in the film. I hope that I will allow myself to go through whatever, but on the other side, always do what’s best for the child.”
