Charlize Theron is experiencing motherhood in a different light. The Tully star tells media how the dynamics between her son, Jackson, and daughter, August.
“The last time I was here, the little one was like a year and a half and the oldest was like five [years old],” Theron explains. “Then, it was like, the older one would say, ‘Let’s do this.’ And the little one would be like, ‘Okay.’ And so it was just a peaceful, beautiful, loving relationship that made me cry every single day. Now, I cry, but not because it’s peaceful and loving anymore. The one-year-old is almost three [years old] and she’s like, ‘No.’ And the older one’s like, ‘What? What do you mean no? I said let’s do this.'”
Charlize Theron stars in the upcoming film, Tully. The movie centers around Theron’s character, Marlo, who is a single mom with three kids, including a newborn, to rear. Marlo’s brother gifts her with a nanny who eventually earns the trust of the single mother.
Charlize can definitely relate to her film character as she, too, is a single mom. “When you’re in it, it feels so alone,” the actress admits. “We don’t talk or share enough about how messy it is to raise kids,” Theron adds. “We are living in a time when we share so much and we’re honest about so much, whether it’s the medication we’re taking or what’s happening in the bedroom. But for some reason, being a parent or feeling conflicted about how you are as a parent, we don’t talk about it openly. It’s so strange. A lot of mothers feel a sense of guilt or shame.”
Feeling guilt and shame is one thing. Understanding your limitations as a parent is another aspect. Such is the reason, knowing what works for her and what does not, why Charlize Theron is not interested in expanding her family to three or more kids. “No,” she says. “I think one of the smartest things you can do as a parent is know what you can handle and I can handle this. I can’t handle any more.”
