Wanting to do it all is something that is normal for moms, says Alicia Keys. The star singer tells PEOPLE that balancing her responsibilities at work and home has reached a new climax.
“The biggest challenge recently is how to balance all the travel,” Keys explains. “It’s a lot of time away, and I want to make sure they have consistency and are not being dragged from here to there all the time. Especially now that Egypt is in school, it’s different than before. Sometimes one can be with me and one can’t, and I feel badly about being away.”
Alicia’s time away from home does not mean that she misses out on significant moments with her kids. “I am a very present mom, and you know us moms want to do it all,” she shares. “But we have to be good to ourselves too. We do the best we can and make the best choices we can.”
It was just a few days ago that Alicia Keys shared the motivation behind stepping away from her role as a judge on The Voice. “I can’t wait for you to hear new music, and so that’s one of the reasons why I won’t be able to come back next season,” she told AOL exclusively. “I love writing,” Keys added. “It’s just the most beautiful, exciting things, and every time I get better. That’s the blessing and magic of writing.”
The blessing and magic come with other benefits as well. “My most recent success is continuing to bring the family closer,” Keys tells PEOPLE. “[The album Here has allowed us] to help us all learn how to express ourselves, our emotions and what we are going through as a family,” she adds. “I think a lot of times, we’re not taught how to express ourselves well, especially boys, and I really love how we’ve been taking the time to listen to and learn from each other.”
Alicia Keys and husband Swizz Beatz have two children, Egypt and Genesis, together. Egypt celebrates his seventh birthday in October. Genesis turns 3-years-old in December.
