Actresses Yara Shahidi and Zendaya, along with twelve-year-old editor-in-chief, Marley Dias have used their voices and star-studded statuses to call attention to a variety of issues in today’s world that affect not only women but immigrants and the global community as a whole. As a result of their altruistic natures, the three talented young women have been thrust into the role of “activist,” and have landed three spots on Essence magazine’s first ever #woke100 list because of their efforts.
The special collectors issue, appearing on newsstands this Friday, will recognize 100 “woke” women, focusing on sisterhood and empowerment.
Among the additional honorees for the special May issue, are MSNBC host Joy-Ann Reid, Black Lives Matter co-founder Opal Tometi, actavist Tamika Mallory and Entertainment giant, Shonda Rhimes.
Congratulations to all the honorees on such a well-deserved recognition! To see Essence‘s full list of honorees, click here.
