Yara Shahidi is definitely staying busier than ever before. As she prepares for college, the Black-ish actress also is preparing for her own spin-off show, that follows her character Zoey off to college as well.
Recently, the teen sat down with Jacques Morel from AOL’s Build Series to talk about what viewers can expect from her new venture both on and off the small screen.
“While Zoey has taken so many steps as a young woman and young woman of color to become an independent and to become an activist and to become socially aware, I think this is the most growth we’ve seen from her just in that she has lived under the guise of a family household,” Shahidi comments in the interview.
Although the network has yet to mention many details about Shahidi’s upcoming project, including the name, it is known that the new series will not only address race, but it will also cover topics that relate to gender and sexuality, among other issues.
“One thing that I had noticed in reading the script is that…while she is a young black girl in this political climate, she does have the privilege of being socioeconomically well-off,” Shahidi said. “College, at least for Zoey, is no longer a factor she can hide under or hide with. And so we’re no longer talking about race but the intersection of race and gender and sexuality and the intersection of race and politics. And she finally has to kind of deal on her own.”
We know that recently, Shahidi was officially accepted into all of her top choice schools for college; however, the starlet has yet to reveal where she will spend the next four years embarking upon a new phase in life, studying African-American studies and Sociology. Where ever she ends up, we definitely know that she will thrive and be involved in making the campus a better place.
