To commemorate Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Service, the first family participated in a service project at the D.C. Central Kitchen, where they prepared meals for distribution to local homeless shelters. Obama, First Lady Michelle Obama and their daughters Malia and Sasha donned their aprons and worked the line, preparing burritos along with other volunteers.
“I just want to thank everybody here for the great work they do,” Obama said to workers at the center.
Since their founding in 1989, DC Central Kitchen has prepared over 25 million meals to at-risk residents. Check out DCCentralkitchen.org to see how you can help support the organization.
MLK Day of Service is a part of United We Serve, the President’s national call to service initiative. It calls for Americans to work together by serving in our communities.
