Tip 1: Choose a car seat that is appropriate for your child’s age, weight, physical development & behavior

*Children should remain rear facing as long as possible. AAP recommends rear facing to a minimum of age 2.

*Forward facing children should remain in a 5 point harness as long as possible. AAP recommends to a minimum of 4 years old

*Booster seats should be used for children until they are tall enough to fit into vehicle safety belts. Current research from Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia shows that children are between 8 and 12 years old when they begin to fit vehicle safety belt systems

*Vehicle safety belts are appropriate for your child when you can say “YES!” to all of these questions:- Can my child sit all the way back with his/her bum against the vehicle seat-back?

– Can his/her knees bend over the edge of the seat without sliding forward? (Are the child’s thigh bones long enough?)

– Does the shoulder belt make contact with the center of the collarbone and center chest when buckled? (Shoulder belt under the arm or behind the back increases risk of severe and life-threatening injuries to your child.)

– Does the lap portion of the belt fit under my child’s hip bones and touch the upper thighs? (You should be able to feel the top of BOTH of the hip bones above the lap belt.)

– Is my child mature enough to remain seated this way for the duration of the trip?

Tip 2: Choose a car seat that is comfortable for your child. We recommend involving your young child in the decision-making process.

Tip 3: Choose a car seat that fits well into the vehicle seating position it will be used in

Tip 4: If using multiple car seats in the same car, choose car seats that are narrow enough to allow for a good fit with seatbelts or LATCH

Tip 5: Choose a car seat that you are able to use easily so it will be used correctly each time.
