Pictured are the Rockwell Family: Karyn Parsons-Rockwell (actress, Hillary from “Fresh Prince of Bel Air” and CEO Sweet Blackberry Foundation); Alexandre Rockwell (director “Four Rooms,” “In the Soup,” and “Pete Smalls Is Dead”); and their kids Lana and Nico Rockwell. The Rockwells were photographed by artist Kiino Villand, who has this to say about his portrait :
“In recent American history it was illegal in many parts of the country for white people to marry people of African descent. Several states also had laws specifically prohibiting intermarriage of whites with Asians or Native Americans. While our society and laws have evolved considerably since then, we still have work to do.
In this year, 2010, my portrait subjects and I have provided ourselves as living examples of this cultural and legal evolution. I gathered my own family and a handful of friends from our neighborhood of Silver Lake in Los Angeles to explore the ever-shifting notion of what constitutes a “typical” American family.
It is our wish to keep the momentum of our evolving society moving forward so that all people will soon have the right to marry, regardless of the color of their skin or their gender. We are particularly interested in celebrating diversity and manifesting equality for everyone.”
