Don’t expect to see seven-year-old Sy’rai on the new VH1 reality series, Brandy and Ray-J: A Family Business. Sy’rai’s mom, singer Brandy Norwood, is adamant about keeping her daughter off the big screen.
“It was a conscious decision. I want my daughter to have a normal life as much as she possibly can, and I think that putting her on a television show every week, it just wasn’t the right time for her. She has a lot of personality, and it would have been great for people to see our interaction as mother and daughter — we have a beautiful relationship. That’s the only thing I’m kind of bummed about, but I just want her to continue to have her privacy and her normal life.”
Brandy adds that Sy’rai’s dad had a part to play in the decision-making process.
“It was a tough decision, her dad [music producer Robert Smith, whom Brandy separated from in 2003] and I kept going back and forth, but ultimately we both decided it was best for her stay as a normal 7-year-old.”
In the future, we may just see Sy’rai on television…
“She changes her mind about what she wants to be when she grows up — one minute she wants to be a singer and on TV, and the next she doesn’t. I just don’t want to be the one forcing her to do anything she doesn’t want to do in the future. She’s okay with it, I’m okay with it. It’s all good,” says Brandy.
