Warryn Campbell is the founder of My Block Records, whose roster includes gospel duo Mary Mary, of which Erica is a member.

In addition to taping for the second season of their reality show on WE TV, Erica and sister Tina Campbell are preparing to be honored at the Essence Empowerment Experience scheduled to commence on July 8, 2012. The Gospel singers recently conducted an interview with Essence in which they talked about their careers and parenting skills.

Both Tina and Erica are elated to be among those honored by Essence for their artistry. “We’re just blessed to be in the company of our icons, like Tremaine Hawkins and Kim Burrell,” Tina said. Erica added, “We grew up watching them so to be honored by them is fantastic. There are always more people who need the inspiration and who need to know God. It’s tiring but we’re not tired. Until I breathe my last breath I’ll probably be somewhere singing or encouraging someone.”

Although the sisters are happy to be a successful group, they sometimes wonder if all the glitz and glamor is stealing them away from their family. “My kid had her first Mother’s Day event at pre-school and she had to it with one of my aunts,” Tina said. “I had to hear the song to mommy on video, it broke my heart. Not being able to be home with my children, having to work hard to reconnect with my husband and being gone so much that I don’t know who to give my time to first when I come home. I wonder do the people I love know that I love them or am I too busy being a career woman,” asked the singer.

The sisters are operating under the modern realm of ‘family’ with both parents working, but admit that some things never change. When it comes to discipline, Erica and Tina believe in firm punishment. “The bible says ‘Spare the rod and spoil the child,” says Tina, “but we’re not fans of abuse. I will say this— if I have a teenage child and they put their hands on me, they’re going to remember that I’m their mama and they’re the child.” Erica adds, “Culturally, most African Americans believe in reprimanding their children. Things are shifting a bit, but we don’t believe in getting run over. I’m not giving my kids any medicine and I’m not giving them a timeout.”

Mary Mary’s new album Go Get It is currently on sale at all major music stores including iTunes and Amazon. The album serves as a ‘Greatest Hits’ project featuring the new song ‘Go Get It’ along with remixed tracks. Fans of the Gospel duo should be on the lookout for their second season of reality series ‘Mary Mary’ set to premiere later this year, going into next year. Season one of the show is available for purchase and download on iTunes.
