Being the son of NBA Hall of Famer Dikembe Mutombo are literally big shoes to fill, but Ryan Mutombo did not let that stop him from becoming a top recruit for the class of 2021.
16-year-old Ryan Mutombo follows in his father’s large footsteps, playing center for the Lovett School in Atlanta, Georgia. Standing at 6’11” and weighing 215 pounds, Ryan has not only inherited his 7’3″ father’s size, but his talent as well. 247Sports currently has Ryan ranked nationally as no. 65 overall, the 13th best center and the third best recruit in the state of Georgia.
Despite the NCAA currently banning in-person recruiting due to the coronavirus pandemic, scholarship offers are still sent out, and Ryan Mutombo has received many of them from prominent schools in recent weeks. The list of schools that have taken notice of Mutombo and sent him offers include Florida, Florida State, Tennessee, Stanford, Virginia Tech, Wake Forest and Vanderbilt.
“I’m assuming the offers came from schools watching my games from this year,” says Mutombo. “Now that everybody is stuck in quarantine and not able to go out, the coaches are starting to watch film from this year. I think that really helped me because all my games are available to watch on my Hudl page.”

In addition to the impressive list of schools that have sent offers Ryan Mutombo’s way, he has already received offers from Georgia Tech, Richmond, Texas A&M, Appalachian State and Georgetown. Georgetown, is not only his father’s alma mater, but it is coached by NBA legend and Georgetown alum Patrick Ewing, who Mutombo has known all his life, as he calls him “Uncle Pat.”
Since Ryan Mutombo is only a junior and has time to grow, the list of offers he receives will certainly increase in the future. Though Mutombo admits he could fit well at Georgetown, he prefers to keep all his options available. “I’m looking more for the right fit for me. I know Georgetown is great and it’d be great to go to my dad’s alma mater, but I have to make sure I make the right choice for me if I’m trying to get to the next level beyond college,” says Mutombo. “I’m just making sure I keep all my options open.”
