CHANCE THE RAPPER AND WIFE ARE GETTING BEAT UP BY THEIR KIDS

With schools and businesses closed because of the COVID-19 (coronavirus) pandemic and families being quarantined in their homes, many parents (especially younger ones) are now fully realizing the challenges of raising their children. Rapper/singer Chance the Rapper and his wife Kirsten Corley, who have two kids, 4-year-old Kensli and 7-month-old Marli Bennett, are two of those parents. On April 6, Chance the Rapper appeared on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert via Zoom to discuss how the coronavirus has affected his parenting.

Chance the Rapper explained how parenting for him has become more difficult during the coronavirus pandemic. “I feel like I didn’t have two kids until this quarantine started,” said Chance. “Between the nanny, the grandparents, and the school, we basically gave each other high fives everyday. Now it’s like a full-on 1-on-1 or 1-on-2, sometimes. They’re beating us up.”

Aside from discussing the joys of parenthood, Chance the Rapper discussed his unhappiness with not being able to visit his grandmother due to the coronavirus, and Stephen Colbert surprised Chance by rapping the lyrics to his song “Sunday Candy“. “I’ve never met her, but I feel like I know your grandma because I know she could say with her voice in her way that she loves you, with her eyes, with her smile, with her belt, with her hands, with her money,” rapped Colbert. “You are the thesis of her prayers, her nieces and her nephews are just pieces of the layers, only one she love as much as you is Jesus Christ and Taylor.”

Stephen Colbert went on to complete the second verse without missing a beat. “Damn, why are you so good at rapping, dude?” asked Chance in amused admiration. Colbert’s sly response was: “Well, I better learn how to rap because you’re learning how to host,” referring to Chance hosting the 2020 remake of MTV’s 2003 prank show Punk’d.

Chance the Rapper also encouraged people to use the time afforded by the quarantines to relax. “One way to look at this is as an ordained divine moment of rest,” said Chance. “Everything doesn’t have to be in the benefit of business. Some things can be for the benefit of your spirit.”
