Derrick Rose, the former NBA MVP, has officially announced his retirement at 35 years old.
The basketball legend shared the news Thursday morning via social media and placed ads in the local newspapers of the six NBA cities where he made his mark: Chicago, New York, Cleveland, Minneapolis, Detroit, and Memphis.
In a statement to The Athletic, Rose reflected on his journey, saying, “The next chapter is about chasing my dreams and sharing my growth. I believe true success comes from becoming who you were created to be, and I want to show the world who I am beyond basketball.”
He added, “Whether good or bad, everyone has a ‘What if’ story in their life. Even if I could, I wouldn’t change anything in mine, because it’s what helped me find real joy.”
Rose, who shares two children with his wife Alaina Rose and has a son from a previous relationship, received an outpouring of support from family and fans alike. His wife, Alaina, penned a sweet tribute to her husband, highlighting his dedication to his family.
“The 1, NEVER the 2! Alaina began. “Everything you do, you do with your family in mind, and we love and appreciate you more than words can say. We are beyond proud of you! You did what so many wouldn’t—you kept going, no matter what. You’ve inspired us all, and we’re incredibly lucky to have witnessed every part of your journey—the highs, the lows, and everything in between.”
She continued, “You mean the world to this league, and you’ve made history that no one can ever erase. You’ve paved the way, and no one can deny that. You’re truly HIM—the most humble, kind, loving, and respected, both on and off the court. For everything, there is a SEASON, and now it’s time for the next chapter. I can’t wait for the world to see the greatness that’s still ahead of you. Letting go is never easy, but your best days are still to come, and I can’t wait to be there with you every step of the way.”
She signed off, “Thank you for all the memories, Chicago, New York, Cleveland, Minnesota, Detroit and Memphis—we will miss you. Forever our MVP, on and off the court! Love, your home team!”
After being selected as the first overall pick in the 2008 NBA Draft by the Chicago Bulls, Derrick Rose quickly rose to stardom, becoming the youngest player ever to win the NBA MVP award in 2011.
Following his time with the Bulls, Rose played for the New York Knicks, Cleveland Cavaliers, Minnesota Timberwolves, Detroit Pistons, and Memphis Grizzlies.
