Suffering a pregnancy loss can be devastating and can cause life-long trauma for many individuals. In a recent interview on The Jennifer Hudson Show, the Tony award-winning actress, Renée Elise Goldsberry reflects on her miscarriage ten years later.

“Renee, you were in Hamilton, and the original The Color Purple what was that like?” Hudson questioned.

“It was a beautiful thing for me, because The Color Purple, your production, was literally exactly 10 years from when I had done it on Broadway,” Goldsberry responded. “And it was an emotional time for me, doing The Color Purple, because I had lost a baby doing The Color Purple.”

“And I remember thinking when I was receiving a Tony and thanking God for the opportunity to have been in that show and to have been in this show [Hamilton] and to have these children. And I looked out and I saw the producers and all of you out in the audience in The Color Purple again, and it just felt like God was telling me, ‘Don’t you ever forget what I can give you in spite of what you think you’ve lost.'”

The Girls5Eva actress and her husband, Alexis Johnson, are parents to two children: son Benjamin, who was born in 2009 and daughter Brielle, made them a family-of-four in 2014, via adoption.

In a past interview with People Magazine Goldsberry talked about her motherhood journey.

“My greatest wish for my children is that they fulfill their purpose,” said Goldsberry. “I know that all children, and in particular mine, are here for a reason. My path to motherhood was challenging, to say the least, and I always feel like I’m living a Sliding Doors version of my life.”

She continued, sharing with the outlet that she believes, in terms of her children being in the world, “ … means they’re supposed to be here. I feel like my job is not to screw them up!”

She concluded the interview by saying, “My kids make me laugh every single day — especially when they’re their most precocious.”

From where we are sitting, it seems as if Goldsberry is THAT mom, you know the one, that everyone wants to hang out with.
