Victoria Monét graced the 66th GRAMMY Awards alongside her daughter, Hazel Monét Gaines, and husband John Gaines. The trio made a jaw-dropping entrance, with Hazel and Victoria in matching custom Atelier Versace dresses.
However, the showstopper of the night was little Hazel, who at the age of two, is the youngest person ever nominated for a Grammy Award. Hazel’s feature alongside Earth, Wind & Fire on “Hollywood” earned her a nomination in the Best Traditional R&B Performance category, making her a history-maker in the music industry.
While Hazel may not have taken home the coveted award, the significance of the moment was not lost on her proud mother. On the red carpet, Victoria Monét shared her thoughts with “E! News,” expressing the beauty of having one of her biggest moments alongside her daughter.
“It’s really beautiful,” she said. “There was a lot of fear getting pregnant. Going through COVID as a pregnant woman … of the fears are projected on you with career and mom balance. To have one of my biggest moments alongside my daughter is the perfect wink from God. ‘You’re doing the right thing. Keep going.’”
Monét hopes to explain the magnitude of the moment to Hazel in the future. “I don’t think she quite understands,” she added.
Victoria Monét herself received seven nominations for her debut album, ‘Jaguar II.’ Her journey to success spans a decade, during which she crafted blockbuster hits for artists like Ariana Grande, Chloe x Halle, and Selena Gomez before stepping into the limelight with her own acclaimed career.
In her emotional acceptance speech, she reflected on the trials and tribulations of her musical journey. “This award was a 15 year pursuit,” said Monét. “I moved to LA in 2009 and I like to liken myself to a plant who was planted. You can look at the music industry as soil. It can be looked at as dirty, or it can be looked at as a source of nutrients and water. My roots have been growing underneath the ground unseen for so long. I feel like today I am sprouting finally above ground.”
