In an exclusive multi-part interview on CBS Mornings, JAY-Z opened up about his 11-year-old daughter, Blue Ivy Carter, whom he shares with singer Beyonce. During the interview, the rapper covered a range of topics, including Blue’s performance on the Renaissance Tour.
One of the surprising revelations during the interview was the story behind Blue Ivy’s unique name. JAY-Z shared that initially, they had considered naming her “Brooklyn.” However, as their journey through pregnancy progressed, the couple’s prenatal checks led them down a different path.

“We was calling her Blueberry. Like, ‘Look at the little blueberry.’ You know, it was like a nickname,” he said. “It just was natural. We just took the ‘berry’ off of it and called her Blue.”
When asked if Blue thinks her dad is “cool,” JAY-Z humorously recounted a time when she used to be a bit embarrassed by her famous father. “There was a time where she was like, ‘Daaaaad,'” he teased, mimicking Blue’s reaction. He reassured her, saying, “I’m cool. I don’t know what you’re saying. I’m cool! You got cool parents! At your house, your parents [are] cool.”
Jay continued, revealing how his daughter’s perspective has evolved over the years. “She used to be frontin’ on me a little bit. But [now] I catch her. I catch her in the corner, you know? Now she asks me, you know, if this is cool, if her sneakers [are cool].”
Blue Ivy is not only getting fashion advice from her dad but also appears to be inheriting her parents’love for the stage. She recently joined her mother on stage during several stops of Beyoncé’s Renaissance World Tour, which concluded earlier this month. The young talent showcased her dancing skills during two of Beyoncé’s iconic numbers, “My Power” and “Black Parade.”
While Blue was initially “nervous” and “frightened” to perform on tour, proud papa Jay-Z says “she wanted to do it.”
“She wanted to do it the first night, and we was like, ‘OK, if this is something you wanna do, you can’t just go out there. You gotta go work with the dancers, and go work. And she worked every day and watched her work hard.”
JAY-Z acknowledged that Blue Ivy has had to navigate a life in the public eye from a very young age, with all the scrutiny and opinions that come with it.
“Blue’s been born into this world that she didn’t ask. She’s been born into a life she didn’t ask for. So since she was born she’s been in, like, scrutiny and public eye, and everyone having an opinion,” Jay stated.
Blue Ivy Carter is the eldest daughter of JAY-Z and Beyoncé. The power couple also has 6-year-old twins, Rumi and Sir, together.
