It is official. Coco Gauff advances to her first US Open singles final!
Thursday night, despite the momentum being interrupted by a protest from climate activists, Coco Gauff advanced her game to that of finalist. The 19-year-old tennis phenom beat out Karolina Muchova, 6-4, 7-5, to reach her second Grand Slam singles final.
“Some of those points were so loud,” she said of her opponent’s shots. “I don’t know if my ears are going to be okay,” Gauff joked with the crowd during the interview after her match. “I grew up watching this tournament… but the job isn’t done so hopefully you guys can back me on Saturday.”
After her iconic win, everyone wanted to know what the teen had planned for the rest of the night.
“Press, treatment, watch some anime—literally, today I watched four or five episodes of My Hero Academia,” she responded.
Gauff continued saying, “I may watch some of the [next semifinal] match, maybe not.”
This has been an exciting run for Gauff full of career “firsts.” This will be her first trip to the US Open singles final, and her win to get her, earned her a history-making moment as the youngest American to make the final since Serena Williams did it in 2001.
“Honestly, when I had that [loss] at Wimbledon, I was really sort of thinking for offseason and preparing for next year. You know, I still think I have a lot to improve, but yeah, 100 percent I wasn’t thinking these results would happen,” Gauff said in an interview. “Even after D.C., didn’t think this would happen. Even after Cincy, didn’t think this would happen. I’m really proud of myself, and like I said, there is still a long ways to go.”
Even if she does not come out on top Saturday, Gauff has already added another “first” to her accolades. On Monday, she and Jessica Pegula “will become the new co-ranked WTA World No. 1 doubles players” since 2012.
