GABRIELLE UNION AND DWYANE WADE TALK ABOUT NEW KIDS’ HAIRCARE LINE

With the creation of their skin/hair care line, Proudly, Gabrielle Union and husband, NBA Legend, Dwayne Wade are revolutionizing the industry for melanin-rich babies. The actress recently sat down with Kate Sandoval Box from Oprah Daily to talk about their inspiration for the company and much more.

“When Kaav was born, she had very unique skin needs, but the skincare options available weren’t really centering the needs of melanated skin—and a lot of the highly reviewed options weren’t EWG-verified, so we worried about their ingredients,” Union said to Sandoval Box in her interview.

She continued, “We created the brand of our dreams all because of Kaav’s gnarly diaper rash.”

Proudly started out with a skin care focus; however, Wade said that as soon as they launched, they were getting asked, “‘When are you going to get into haircare? Because those all-in-one kid formulas are not for us.”

So, challenge accepted. Union said that they started out with “… adults; between our family members we have hair textures ranging from 3B [medium to tight spirals] to 4C [tight coils]. Then we expanded to getting feedback from Kaav and her little toddler crew, and then families outside our network.”

Today, the result of their latest addition to the Proudly family is a product, according to Oprah Daily, that is: a tear-free, hypoallergenic, made-for-little-scalps shampoo, two conditioners (a medium option for waves and loose curls, and a heavy one for tighter coils), and a detangler. All the formulas contain glycerin and rosemary extract to nourish a sensitive scalp and marshmallow root to provide slip, so you can easily glide through tangles.

Union perfectly sums it all up, thinking of her own childhood hair journey, “I took my not-so-great experience with my hair and changed it for our daughter, and, hopefully, kids everywhere with our brand Proudly.”

In the interview, Union also noted what Kaavia’s favorite part of wash day is, actually doing it all by herself!

“She loves using the shampoo by herself. The conditioners are more of a mom and dad step because you have to have patience for that, and I don’t know how many toddlers you know with patience.”
