ALECIA WASHINGTON MAKES HISTORY AS FIRST BLACK VALEDICTORIAN IN 100 YEARS

Major congratulations on finishing high school are not the only accolades that should shower recent high school graduate, Alecia Washington. The North Carolinian has made history as the first black valedictorian at R.J. Reynolds High School, Winston-Salem, North Carolina, in 100 years, and of course, this deserves considerable praise.

“I am R.J Reynolds first African-American valedictorian in 100 years of it’s existence!” the teen excitedly and proudly posted on Instagram.

She continued, “This is a historic moment that I’m sure my ancestors are very proud of and would say job well done! I thank God for his guidance, I’m thankful for my family, friends, and my amazing support system. Looking forward to graduation and celebrating this amazing class of 2023 on Sunday! #representationmatters #beyonce #topoff.”

According to WXII 12 News, Washington was not just a bookworm, but she was an active student, who was very involved in extracurricular activities as well. In addition to her studies, Washington served as vice president in the Ebon Society, a student government association. She was also a member of Youth Grant Makers, an organization that helps create grants for student-led organizations.

And of course, to make it thus far, unquestionably takes a village of support. Washington gives credit to many in her tribe for helping to make this milestone for her possible. Among those who supported her, she gives credit to her great-grandmother who taught her a very valuable lesson, which she shared with WXII 12 News in her interview.

“If you’re going to invest in anything, invest in yourself. Invest in getting a good education and expand your knowledge because that is nothing nobody can take away.”

So, just where is this amazingly talented young scholar headed in the fall? Well, her next stop will be the University of North Carolina at Charlotte on a full academic scholarship. Washington plans to pursue a career in the medical field, becoming a pediatric nurse anesthetist.

Congratulations, Alecia! We know that the best is unquestionably yet to come for you. We have no doubt that your future will be bright!
