Dennis Barnes, a senior at the International High School of New Orleans, has made history in the US by receiving over $9 million in scholarship offers from 125 colleges and universities. Barnes, who holds leadership positions in the National Honor Society and has a cumulative GPA of 4.98, plans to achieve over $10 million in scholarship offers by the end of the month.
“I submitted college applications in August, with an eye on raising the bar high for college admissions. Decision letters were an overflow in my mailbox and hundreds of scholarship offers,” Barnes said in an interview.
For the past two years, the scholar has been studying at Southern University of New Orleans while attending high school. He has earned college credits and plans to get a dual undergraduate degree in computer science and criminal justice.
Dr. Adierah Berger, Head of School for IHSNO, praised Barnes for his dedication to academics and leadership skills. She said, “Dennis has always demonstrated a passion for learning and leadership, and his remarkable accomplishment is a testament to his hard work and commitment to excellence.”
Dennis Barnes was motivated by college admissions counselor Denise James, according to IHSNO. Barnes advised fellow seniors applying to colleges and scholarships to be vigilant, stating, “The road to a successful future is to plan ahead, network with the collegiate partners, and know that if you can see your vision, you can achieve your goal.”
He was recently awarded the Jose Luis Baños Award for Excellence in Spanish Language by Maria Page, Honorary Consul of Spain in New Orleans, for his proficiency in Spanish. He is fluent in Spanish and has received official qualifications from the Institute Cervantes on behalf of Spain’s Ministry of Education, Culture, and Sports.
