Zaya Wade and Gabrielle Union were two of many to attend the 2023 GLAAD Media Awards on Thursday (Mar. 30). The event was held at The Beverly Hilton in Beverly Hills, California, and Gabrielle was Zaya’s date.
“Zaya is my date tonight,” Union told Billboard. “For her to be able to see so many members of her community, of our community, that she’s looked up to that have inspired her that have held her down [and] had her back, is pretty huge,” Gabrielle said of the experience.
“There’s not too many moments, as a parent, where I get to deliver in this kind of way. So I’m pretty thrilled,” Union told Billboard. “I’m just really happy to be here and happy to be a part of sharing the community with my daughter.”
Zaya Wade is viewed by many as a pioneer among her peers. The youngster recently celebrated her first cover with DAZED magazine a few weeks ago.
“So many big changes have happened over the last couple of years with me, but also just in general,” Zaya told DAZED. “I think it’s not my job, but it’s my honor to continue and further my family’s education and appreciation for the entire LBGTQ+ community as we grow together,” the youngster said. “As our understanding of acceptance has broadened over the past couple of years, we have made the strides to keep ourselves educated and combat the ignorance,” Wade shared.
Combatting ignorance has not been easy for Zaya. The youngster has faced challenges from outsiders and loved ones while navigating her path of identity. Still, the youngster has been able to rely on her father, Dwyane Wade, along with her brother, Zaire, and stepmother for support.
“So beautiful,” one fan said after seeing one candid of Zaya on her Instagram page. “Stunning,” another social media follower shared.
The 2023 GLAAD Media Awards comes to New York City in May.
