Jennifer Hudson is adjusting to life as the mom of a teenage son.
“Whew child,” she told PEOPLE at Glamour’s Women of the Year Awards, which were held in New York City this past Tuesday (Nov. 1). “Being a mom to a teenage boy. I feel like I have a new child at 13,” the celebrity mom said.
David Otunga Jr. turned 13 years old in August. He enjoyed a hip birthday party that included Go Karts and other treats.
“He has his own swag now, his own plans and ideas, and it’s trusting my teachers,” Jennifer told PEOPLE at Glamour’s Women of the Year Awards. “You know, because he’s older now, he’s more independent and it’s like, well this is what we want them to be. So feeling confident enough to let him come into his own,” Hudson shared.
Young David is coming into his own as a homebody. It was during a recent interview with Glamour that Jennifer Hudson revealed her son’s love for being at home more often than going to events.
“All we can do as parents is put our teachings in them,” Hudson shared with the magazine. “But at some point, we’ve got to trust those teachings and see what they take and do and what they learn from it,” she added.
Many thought David would follow in his dad David Otunga Sr.’s footsteps because of the youngster’s love for all things wrestling during his younger years. Now, it seems the teen may take after his mom in the area of show business.
A few of Jennifer Hudson’s loyal fans thought she would give her son a sibling when he was a small child. “I wouldn’t say never, but if I don’t, I’m grateful for my baby that I have,” Hudson shared with Glamour magazine during her recent interview. “You do need other kids around to match a kid’s energy,” she admitted.
Jennifer Hudson was one of several women honored at this year’s Glamour Woman of the Year Awards. Angela Bassett was also honored by the editorial as a Woman of the Year.
