Dwyane Wade is on a journey with his daughter, Zaya Wade. The celebrity father recently shared his reaction to learning his child was transgender.
“If I don’t know something in this life, especially if it comes from my children, then it’s my job to go and learn these things,” Dwyane shared with the press. “I think when things happen personally to you, when you have a personal connection to something or someone, you take it a little bit more serious,” Wade added. “When it happens to you, you have to look at it in the face. You have to.”
Zaya Wade came out as transgender in 2019. The youngster made her public debut as a member of the LGBTQ+ community at the PRIDE parade in Miami. Some criticized Dwyane Wade and his wife, Gabrielle Union, for encouraging Zaya to live authentically. Others, however, came to the celebrity couple’s defense and have remained in Dwyane Wade’s corner in the retired NBA star’s quest to be a supportive father to his kids.
“Zaya is a 14-year-old amazing girl, who since she stepped into her classroom on day one has never gotten lower than A,” Dwyane Wade shared during a recent interview with TODAY. “She’s my daughter,” Dwyane declared. “She’s beautiful and she has so many other great qualities that she is tapping into that everyone is starting to see.”
Zaya Wade has been in the spotlight in a special way these past few months. The teen’s recent interview with former First Lady Michelle Obama impressed the masses as Zaya was poised and every bit engaged during the conversation. Many were amazed that Zaya was able to hold a meaningful discussion with some of Michelle Obama’s caliber. Others were encouraged by the teen’s refusal to be anything outside of herself during the meeting.
Zaya Wade is Dwyane Wade’s youngest child with Siohvaughn Funches. Dwyane also has a son named Zaire with Siohvaughn. Gabrielle Union and Dwyane Wade have one biological child, Kaavia James, together. Dwyane also has a younger son named Xavier with Aja Metoyer.
