Motherhood is the best gift for Girlfriends star Golden Brooks. The celebrity mom took to Instagram last Sunday (May 9) to celebrate her life as a mom to her daughter, Dakota.
“And then this happened,” Brooks shared along with a picture collage that showed her daughter down through the years. “This little funny, curious, fashion/make-up loving, best flower picker and a laugh you could hear from miles away,” the celebrity mom said.
“This is my Dakota,” Golden declared. “The greatest gift ever is to be your mom! To keep discovering all that lives in you,” the celebrity mom wrote to her daughter. “We as mothers do the BEST we can and to loosen the grip so these little spirits can fly and grow and make mistakes, but I will always be there to help you figure it ALL out. Love my little munchie!”
Some may remember Golden Brooks’ role as a mom on Girlfriends. The celebrity’s character, Maya Denise Wilkes, and her husband, Darnell Leroy Wilkes, became parents to their son, Jabari Darnell Wilkes, when they were teens. Maya and Darnell face various obstacles in their marriage and on personal levels while finding their footing in the world. The on-screen couple, however, ultimately lavish in the fact that the lives they envisioned as teens manifest in the end.
Golden Brooks has an impressive acting career that includes both film and television. Still, her role on Girlfriends remains iconic.
“I can win an Emmy or an Oscar and the first question will be ‘Is there gonna be a Girlfriends movie?’ And I probably get about 10 stories a day tagged to me with scenes from the show,” Brooks said during a recent interview. “So I know that it’s part of my fabric,” the actress added. “And now with it being on Netflix, it’s in a whole new light. It makes me so happy. It’s just an iconic piece of history that you cannot duplicate.”

Dakota is Golden Brooks’ daughter with D.B. Woodside. She celebrates her twelfth birthday in September.
