“With polyamory, I feel like the main foundation is the freedom to be able to create a relationship style that works for you and not just stepping into monogamy because that’s what everyone around you says is the right thing to do,” Willow shared during the episode. “So I was like, how can I structure the way that I approach relationships with that in mind? Also, doing research into polyamory, the main reasons why monogamous relationships – or why marriage – why divorces happen is infidelity.”

Polyamory is a lifestyle in which individuals have intimate relations with more than one partner at the same time. All relationships are at the consent of all parties involved. Some view those who embrace polyamorous living as individuals who are afraid to commit to one partner. Willow, however, revealed that there is more to the story than what may appear on the surface.

“Let’s say you haven’t always been the kind of person that wanted to have sex all the time,” Willow shared. “But your partner is. Are you gonna be the person to say, ‘Just because I don’t have these needs, you can’t have them either?'”

“And so that’s kind of one of the reasons why I was actually interested in poly because I was introduced to it through a nonsexual lens,” the young adult explained. “In my friend group, I’m the only polyamorous person and I have the least sex out of all my friends.”

Willow Smith is Will Smith and Jada Pinkett-Smith’s youngest child. She is often characterized as one who pushes the envelope and challenges the norm. It was just a few months ago that Willow shared the motivation behind her bold creativity during an interview with Marie Claire.

“I’m a young woman of color in America,” Smith shared. “What I express [in my art] is my dismay or my sadness at the reality that I’m seeing in front of me.”

Catch Willow alongside her mom and grandmother, Adrienne Banfield-Norris, every week on Red Table Talk.
