“I ended up having to have an emergency [cesarean] section because [my daughter] Freeya had meconium in her system,” the celebrity mom said. “Meconium is basically when the baby poops inside their amniotic sac,” Brooks explained. “So she was in distress and, therefore, we both could be in distress, and so we just had to make it happen.”

Danielle Brooks and her boyfriend, Dennis Gellin, welcomed their daughter, Freeya Carel Gellin, on November 16, 2019. Freeya’s birth came just four months after Danielle announced her expectancy to the world in July 2019.

“I didn’t want to get induced,” Danielle told Katie of her emergency c-section during Thursday’s interview. “[My doctor] kept saying the good reasons why it’s okay to get a c-section and I was like, ‘I don’t want it!'”

Brooks was worried she would suffer from preeclampsia, which is a condition that causes high blood pressure in pregnant women and may also lead to induced labor. The Orange Is The New Black star, however, did not develop the potentially life-threatening condition.
