The talented teen has been cast as one of the leads, opposite Chosen Jacobs, in the new upcoming adaptation the classic Cinderella story.
“Bibbidi bobbidi BOOM Disney’s got another black princess y’all,” Underwood wrote on Twitter. She further celebrated the news on Instagram.
“When you wish upon a star…thank you @disney & @disneyplus for creating an opportunity for us to dream big & reimagine how we see your princesses and princes. Imma be a Disney Princess y’all.”
Chosen Jacobs also took to Instagram to announce his excitement about the upcoming film. “When you wish upon a star 💫 Thank you @disney and @disneyplus . Can’t wait to share “Sneakerella” with you. Link in bio.”
Sneakerella, set to debut on Disney+ in 2021, isn’t centered on the traditional Cinderella story. The reported pop/hip hop musical follows the story of Kira King, Underwood, who is the daughter o legendary basketball star and sneaker tycoon Darius King, portrayed by John Salley. King soon meets El, portrayed by Chosen Jacobs, who is an aspiring sneaker designer from Queens who works as a stock boy in a shoe store that once belonged to his deceased mother. One thing leads to another, sparks fly, and with the help o King and a Fairy Godfather, El finally gets the opportunity to realize his dream.
“Sneakerella brings a vibrant, modern approach to a beloved story by suggesting that magic is the result of hard work and determination and exists within each of us,” Disney’s VP of Original Movies Lauren Kisilevsky said in a statement to Deadline. “[Director] Liz Allen’s unique vision, Lexi and Chosen’s amazing chemistry, the incredible music and the gravity-defying choreography, will bring this movie to life and inspire audiences of all ages.”
We cannot wait to see this latest tale from Disney. We have a feeling that this one is going to be one of the best “Cinderella” stories yet!
