Kehlani has been quite the activist in San Francisco’s Bay Area these past few weeks. It was just a few days ago that the celebrity mom shed light on the Fill Hotels, Not Graves initiative, which seeks to end homelessness in Oakland.
“Alameda County and the state of California have spent the past few weeks scrambling to improve their COVID-19 programs for houseless folks,” Kehlani shared on her Instagram page. And for months, we have been demonstrating what culturally competent, empowering, autonomous mutual aid looks like,” the celebrity mom’s post continued.
“#HotelsNotGraves demonstrates the belief that mutual aid and grassroots solutions are more effective than state programs. The program is run by, and was created by, two unhoused Black and Brown woman leaders of The Village, who are sheltered through the program.”

Kehlani knows all too well about the effects of homelessness. The singer was without a stable residence for a time before finding success in the music industry. “I went from broke and homeless sleeping on couches,” Kehlani said during an interview with XXL magazine. “[I] couldn’t even figure out what I was doing in Los Angeles,” the singer said. “Now, I’m paying my own bills.”
