Like many Americans, tennis great Serena Williams is currently waiting out the coronavirus pandemic at home. Williams is quarantining with her husband, Reddit founder Alexis Ohanian Sr. and their 2-year-old daughter Alexis Olympia Ohanian Jr., and they are living their best quarantine lives.
During an interview for the recent Yahoo! special “Reset Your Mindset at Work,” Serena Williams spoke about how she and her family have been enjoying their self-isolation so far. Adjusting from the grind of her busy tennis schedule to a home lockdown took some getting used to, but Williams soon fell “in love” with life under lockdown. “In the beginning, it was definitely hard, but once I got over that, I was like, I’m kind of in love with this staying-at-home life,” says Williams. “It’s good to take a break and just really focus on the things that are really important.”
Serena Williams is usually away from home due to tennis touring, which can last for 11 months at a time, so under quarantine, Williams cherishes every bit of time she gets to spend with her adorable daughter. Even though balancing her work and parenting can be challenging, Williams wouldn’t have it any other way.
“I started quarantining a little bit earlier, so I was in the house a really long time. Then I was like, OK, I’m with a 2-year-old, who’s amazing but it’s a lot of work every single day,” said Williams. “Then she was in this phase where every word was ‘mommy,’ and I loved it, but at the same time I’m like I can’t hear this anymore, I can’t hear ‘mommy, mommy.’ It was definitely challenging, but we overcame it, and now we’re in our Cinderella robes,” said Williams, noting that she gave the interview in a blue Cinderella dress after playing with Alexis Olympia.
Besides caring for her toddler, Serena Williams also spends her quarantine time training and dieting for her eventual return to the tennis courts. “I also want to be healthy when I go back out and play tennis. I want to feel super good,” says Williams.
