Yolanda Adams and her daughter, Taylor Crawford, attended the 2019 Soul Train Awards on Sunday (November 17). The legendary Gospel singer received the Lady of Soul Award for her many years of releasing music that everyone can enjoy.
“This is amazing,” Yolanda said during her acceptance speech. “All you do is wake up in the morning, [and] do what you’re passionate about,” she explained. “I am a passionate person about everything I do. I’m passionate about helping people find their great spot.”
“I’m passionate about helping young girls and young boys find their voices. I’m passionate about helping our elders. I’m passionate, so passionate, about writing my story, and my experiences, to let people know that no matter how high you are, you still have to deal. And the way I deal is with the Most High.”
Yolanda Adams also honored her teen daughter during her acceptance speech at the 2019 BET Soul Train Awards. “There’s one little shining star in this room right now that I could not have done any of this without. And that’s my daughter, Taylor Crawford,” the recording artist said. “You are my light,” the celebrity mom said. “And if I can half of the radiant smile that you give me every time I look at you, little lady … If I can live up to that, I have done my job.”
Adams told BET that she enjoys all genres of music before Sunday’s ceremony. “I’ve always listened to music outside of Gospel,” she said. “I grew up listening to a plethora of genres in my house,” Yolanda added. “I pay attention to what’s going on in R&B, and since my daughter is a teenager—a young lady—I pay attention to what’s going on in Hip-Hop. I am learning to decipher what they’re talking about in the ‘mumble rap,'” she mused.
“I love to hear Mary J [Blige’s] passion,” Adams continued. “I love to hear Monica’s [voice]. I love to hear Brandy’s diction and her runs. I love Chris Brown’s voice, too. I think he has an amazing voice. There’s so many genres [that I admire], especially jazz and symphony, pop and rock. I really grew up on all those things. Thank God I was not one of those kids who had to sneak out to listen to that music. It was right there in my house.”
