This past summer was a learning experience for Wanda Sykes and her kids, Lucas and Olivia. The comedian recently stopped by The Ellen Show where she explained how she took her kids’ summer reading list more seriously than they did.
“They’re in fifth grade,” Wanda said of Lucas and Olivia’s growth. The celebrity mom also expressed excitement in the fact that her kids were back in school. “I’m so happy,” Sykes said. “I’m sure all parents are happy. God bless teachers.”
It wasn’t that the celebrity mom did not enjoy her kids’ company during the summer months. There were several family activities. The summer reading schedule set for Lucas and Olivia by their school, however, was a lot for Wanda and her partner, Alex Sykes, to handle.
“The summer reading was kicking our butts,” Wanda admitted to Ellen. “I wish I could just trust my kids [and be like], ‘Hey, here’s the list. You’ve got to read these books.'” Such was not the case. Sykes learned that her son, Lucas, wasn’t necessarily reading the books assigned to him. Her remedy to fix the situation was to complete the assigned readings alongside her kids.
“I had to read three books this summer with them,” the celebrity mom revealed. “When it got close, like school was about to start [for them], I was like, ‘I’ve still got two hundred pages to cover.’ So I’m reading to them while they’re sleeping, hoping it will sink in. It was a mess.”
