It is hard to believe that Marsai Martin was in a dark place a few months ago. The young star, after all, is the youngest person ever to sign a first-look deal in Hollywood. Martin also conceptualized and executively produced the film, Little, which received praise from critics. The Black-ish star received the BET Young Stars Award this past Sunday. Still, Marsai Martin recently told her Instagram fans that she was working through personal challenges when the good things started to unfold.

“Moments from this year, I was in a dark place,” Marsai revealed in a heartfelt social media post a few days ago. “[It was] a place that I didn’t think I was going to get out of,” the young star added. “I thought I wasn’t good enough and I thought I needed to present myself in a way that was ‘perfect’ when I didn’t need to. Putting so much pressure on myself. Fighting with myself. The more I kept how I was feeling hidden, the more this dark emotion got bigger.”

It was not until Marsai reached the end of trying to suppress her emotions that she was able to reach out for help. Martin turned to God and her family. The result was these two life sources working together to help the Black-ish star accept herself and start living her best life.

“Now I’m feeling the best I’ve ever felt In a long time,” Marsai told her social media fans. She went on to “encourage everyone to speak their mind to anyone you trust.”
