Serena Williams is celebrating the tradition of braiding. The celebrity mom took to Instagram earlier this week to tell fans about the significance of the practice and why she is honored to braid her daughter Alexis Olympia’s hair.
“Braiding started in Africa with the Himba people of Namibia,” Serena began her post. “We have been braiding her hair for centuries. In many African tribes braided hairstyles were a unique way to identify each tribe,” she added.
Serena Williams further explained, “Because of the time it would take people would often take the time to socialize. It began with the elders braiding their children, then the children would watch and learn from them. The tradition of bonding was carried on for generations and quickly made its way across the world. I am honored to share this bonding experience with my own daughter and add another generation of historic traditions.”
Serena is making history of her own these days. The celebrity mom recently made the list of Richest Self-Made Women published by Forbes. Such was the first time that an athlete made the list.
Much of Serena’s $225 million net worth comes from investments via the tennis player’s venture capital firm, Serena Ventures. The company makes it a point to invest in businesses owned by women and people of color.

“I want to be a part of it,” Serena told Forbes of her desire to lend a helping hand to small business owners. “I want to be in the infrastructure,” she added. “I want to be the brand, instead of just being the face.”
