Andrea Kelly scored a big victory in court after a judge ruled in her favor in her child support case against R. Kelly. The ‘Happy People’ singer paid his wife thousands in unpaid child support in an effort to avoid jail time.
According to TMZ,
“R. Kelly avoided another trip to the slammer … by ponying up ALL of the back child support he owed to his ex-wife, Drea Kelly.
The disgraced singer appeared in court Wednesday (May 8) in Cook County and forked over $62k. He currently is supposed to pay just over $20k per month to Drea. Wednesday’s payment covers March, April, and May.”
R. Kelly allegedly owed upwards of $160,000 in unpaid child support and was put in jail on account of the outstanding debt earlier this year. Some were shocked to learn that the singer, who was once thought to be one of the highest paid recording artists in the industry, could not afford to pay the amount. R. Kelly later revealed in an interview with Gayle King of CBS This Morning that he could not pay child support because of his ex-wife, Andrea.
“How can I pay child support,” R. Kelly asked. “How? If my ex-wife is destroying my name and I can’t work? How can I work? How can I get paid? How can I take care of my kids? How?”
The celebrity father went on to say, “My kids is (sic) listening to this … all this nonsense and I haven’t even able to spend time with them! What kind of woman would tear down a dad who is trying to have a relationship with their kids?”
Much of R. Kelly’s discredit comes from sexual assault allegations, which are now being given a second look in court. A judge allegedly threw out a default judgment made against Kelly in the matter after the singer’s lawyers claimed that R. Kelly did not respond or appear in court because of illiteracy. The case may now be contested by Kelly and his legal team on the basis of merit.
What is not being contested on the basis of merit is a judge’s order that R. Kelly and Andrea Kelly’s divorce be unsealed. The couple finalized their marriage dissolution in 2009. Stay tuned for more R. Kelly and Adrea Kelly news!
